I could probably count on my left hand the number of people I’ve known who feel like they wouldn’t like to grow further in prayer. Prayer is the life-blood of the spiritual life – our most basic function in relation to God – yet most of us struggle with at some level. For some it’s being as consistent in our prayer habits as we’d like, being able to sit still for more than two minutes without our mind running off to what we need to do that day, or more regularly sensing that we connect with God as we pray. Others would honestly say that though they’ve been praying for a long time, they still don’t really know if they’re doing it “right,” or they sense there is more to prayer than they’ve yet discovered.
Jesus’ disciples had the same kind of struggles, and one day they actually asked Jesus to teach them to pray like he did. Jesus answered. We call his answer “The Lord’s Prayer.”
But friends how seriously do we take his answer? Do we learn from it, use it, live in it – or just read it and move on? What would it look like if we committed ourselves to living in the prayer Jesus gave us, looking for him to use it in our lives, shaping us, molding us, and teaching us how to pray?
This Sunday we begin our fall teaching series, and over the coming weeks we will be committing ourselves to learn from Jesus how to pray. I’m really fired up for this series, and trust God is going to use it in our hearts to bring greater depth, intimacy with him, immediacy in the way we pray and in the way we see God work, and to see prayer break out of some religious corner of our lives and permeate all we do day in, day out. Do you want this? Jesus invites us into this, and I hope you’ll take him up on his offer.
Lord bless you friends, and we’ll look forward to seeing you this weekend –
Tim
